Marisa Algari studied composition in Frankfurt am Main (Germany) with Claus Kühnl, before continuing her education in the diploma program at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Michael Jarrell, and Oscar Bianchi. During her studies in Frankfurt, she founded the Ascensus Orchestra Frankfurt and the concert series Frauen der Musik (Women in Music). Alongside, she has cultivated an active practice as a conductor. She received conducting lessons from Roland Böer (GMD, Nuremberg State Theater) and studies with Andreas Stoehr at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK). Following the completion of her studies, she has conducted music theatre productions and collaborated with ensembles specializing in classical as well as contemporary music, with her artistic work taking her to Germany,
Austria, China, Spain, Switzerland, and Hungary. Most recently, her compositional collaborations with the Ensemble Fractales, the New State Opera Vienna, and the aDevantgarde Festival in Munich have proved particularly formative. Her compositional thinking is shaped, among other influences, by spectralism, whose principles emerge in her work, but through tangible structural processes. At the same time, her music is formed by a close attention to the singular sonic character of each instrument. Rather than treating instrumentation as secondary to musical structure, she allows the physical and acoustic possibilities of instruments to become integral to the conception and development of the work itself.
